Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th-grade World History at a Title I middle school in Miami. Over 3/4's of the student population qualify for reduced-price or free lunch. Many of the students are also English Language Learners, and quite a few are recent immigrants from Latin America.
In the words of one of my students, "We don't even know US History, and you want to teach us World History?" Yes I do, but I need your support!
I make the material engaging and accessible to them through technology, group work, and active discussions, but there are not enough resources to go around. That is where you can help!
My Project
Miami-Dade County Public Schools has only provided a digital version of the World History textbook this year. This is in line with the recent push to include more technology in the classroom, and I and my fellow teachers are all for it. Unfortunately, there are not enough laptops in the school to go around. I have access to 20 laptops in various conditions (15 or so of which I can reasonably say are "reliable"). Many of these laptops have been in use for years, and so the battery life and overall condition is not conducive to the learning environment. I also have classes with over 25 students. Many of these students do not have computer access at home, and school hours are their only chance to read the textbook and engage in online research.
Simply put, there are not enough working laptops to go around.
This project will fund a new Chromebook that can be used on a daily basis. It will have the battery life to last all day and can be used for various tasks from textbook reading to research projects. I can even use the technology to create lessons that mesh well with the other subjects at the school. How fun and informative would it be for the students to create 3-D models of ancient temples? Projects like this allow subjects like math, science, and history to overlap over a single class. While one Chromebook is not enough to provide a device to each student, it is a start and can help ensure that there are a few dependable computers per group in class.
