I teach an inclusion class with students with disabilities, students who are learning English as a second language, and typically developing students. Many of my students have complex circumstances at home that create barriers to their learning. Our families want to see their children succeed, but they may not have the education, resources, or time to help them. This may result in backpacks that do not get checked by an adult or cleaned out for weeks, or students coming to school with a note saying that they did not have the right basic supplies to complete their homework (pencils, scissors, or glue).
According to the data we have available, there is only one student who is reading on grade level in my class.
This is my first year looping up to the next grade level with the same group of kids. I am familiar with their needs, families, and personalities. I want to use this opportunity to make their last year of elementary school memorable and meaningful.
My Project
As Haim Ginott once said, "It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized."
These headphones will be shared by the students, so we want them to be durable and easy to clean.
My students use a research-based reading program which encourages struggling readers to listen to books before reading them on their own. The headphones provided by the school have been around for a while and are very easy to break. The reusable mesh bags will be to help students keep the headphones organized and prevent the cords from tangling. Students will use the adapter cable to listen to a story with a partner if they are reading the same book.
The essential oil diffuser, stretchy sensory toys, and gel pens are all tools in supporting our trauma-sensitive, inclusion classroom. As a teacher, I only have the power to change the environment in the classroom. These tools empower students to small changes and choices they can make their learning environment a safer, calmer space. Disabilities and trauma can interfere with the development of age-appropriate social and independent skills. I will use the games in this project to teach my students sportsmanship, kindness, and strategy. Lastly, we always have snacks in the classroom for students who forget to pack a snack, or do not have adults at home who regularly check to make sure they have a snack.
