Technology and Speech/Language Therapy

Help me give my students the ability to access paperwork scanned through the document scanner virtually and use apps on the iPad to learn in person with improved engagement after quarantine/virtual learning.

My Students

Our students are hard workers who have delays in their communication skills. Many have difficulties with social communication, which makes it difficult for them to make and keep friends. Others have a hard time making their speech sounds or speaking fluently. Still, others need a little help learning new vocabulary or how to create grammatically correct utterances. Some need assistance learning in all of these areas.

They all enjoy learning how to become better communicators in school and at home.

When they have been given tools to improve their communication skills, they increase their confidence when communicating socially with adults and peers.

Over the past year and a half, learning has been impacted by COVID-19. Our students have been absent more, have had to do therapy while wearing masks and/or shields, and have had to have speech sessions over the internet or on e the phone. They have proven that they are still able to thrive when given the right tools and techniques. We would like to add materials that will help them progress quickly during and after virtual speech services.

My Project

The document scanner will allow students to have access to documents and resources that would typically only be available during in person learning. It will also allow us to distribute those resources more easily, because they will be in digital form both during online learning and when students need extra support at home during in-person learning.

The iPads and the iPad cases will allow us to have access to all their in-person apps while learning virtually.

Additionally, when we have students learning in-person, the iPads will allow our more severe students to be able to communicate independently using speech generating apps, which has been shown to improve verbal speech production. During in-person learning, the iPads can also be used by our articulation and language students to do independent practice during group time to help improve progress.
