My students are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and come from many different backgrounds. They use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. Most students have very low language and academic skills when they first come to me due to lack of access to language in earlier years. This creates a long road ahead of us as we work to minimize those large gaps.
My students attend an urban school where 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day-to-day lives. There are many single income families, families that are homeless, and families that are receiving assistance in one form or another.
This year, I will have seven students: two second graders, two third graders, one fourth grader, and one in fifth grade. Most of my students' language and communication skills are very low. My challenge is to teach them their language, ASL, and academics at the same time. It is a tough challenge, and my students give me their best effort every day!
My Project
Due to the increase use of technology in our homes and in the classroom, we are in need of some accessories that we hadn't planned for this year. We are in need of extra charging cords for all of the devices we are using.
Each child has their own one-to-one device given by our district, which has been very useful this past year.
However, the students who chose face to face instruction continue to forget to bring their devices fully charged to school. So, we are constantly in need of a charger. This also means our limited amount of outlets in the classroom are being used and are in strange spots in the room. I have requested a couple of extension cords to help with this problem.
I have also requested a couple wireless mouses to help with my instruction. Since we have been back in the classroom and trying to social distance (staying in one spot) and not share items, it has been difficult. My aides and I try our best, but I am always in need of my wireless mouse that is supposed to stay at my teacher station (where one of my aides works at this time) during instruction. So, having another mouse at my portable teacher station that I am using, would be so beneficial.
It's amazing how much we have learned in technology during the last several months of virtual/hybrid/face to face teaching! Please help me if you are able. Every amount is great appreciated!
