This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is no longer defined by the borders of the four walls. We are connected to the real world out there through video clips that enrich my presentations and our discussions. The sound quality of the clips is essential for students' ability to concentrate in the films.

My students are for the most part, 9th and 10th grade kids, energetic, often easily distracted, but curious and anxious for a good time learning.

Many of their life experiences happen through media of various kinds, and the classroom is no exception. But do they share their experiences through media? The earphones in their ears tell you - no. Unless two teens share a pair of earphones connected to one electronic device, the rich entertainment remains between the two ears of one person. Isn't this unfortunate? In our school, students come with a diversity of background and a range of skills. But being a "Title One" school means that a large percentage of our students, including the 160-170 students that I teach, come from families with low income. The only way for our students to break out of this designation, is to earn high level instruction, succeed in school and apply what they learn in the real world. And a large portion of bringing this real world to the classroom is through media.

My Project

Using media is not one activity. It is a means of communication. In my constantly revised biology course, we use media to project, make observations, to share experiences, to interact. It ranges from presenting a thought-provoking video-clip about cells, genetics, wildlife and evolution, to sharing student-generated video-clips, public service announcements, or stop-motion clips. To do so, we invariably use the LCD projector (and its lamp), that is connected to either my laptop computer or to personal electronic devices. The speakers I am asking for will help us make it possible for everyone in the room to reach the message and for the conversation to include us all. The adapter/charger will be used for sharing media directly from the student's audio-video library. The Plickers cards are parts of the Plickers formative assessment kit, where I project a question with multiple answers, each student responds by raising a student-specific code card, and I scan the class with my iPhone.

Better sound, media adapters and media-based discussion tools (such as Plickers) will connect my students to the materials and classroom activities.

No longer shielded by the projected privacy of their earphones, students will embed in their surrounding, including the digital surrounding. Video clips that either I chose or students created will be heard better and in the long run - remembered fondly as they grow into mature, successful, adults.
