This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a remedial reading class to low-income, mostly minority students. I have middle school school students who are reading behind grade level and, therefore, are very reluctant readers. My middle school is 100% free lunch and over 90% minority.
Many of our scholars come from single family households, without the means to provide their students with the necessary school supplies for the year.
Many of our scholars have experienced indescribable hardships and come to school as a safe haven for their personal struggles. Often, some scholars have to walk through areas of violence to and from school.
Despite these hardships, we believe that our scholars deserve the best educational experience and that we need to work together with families, schools, and the community to provide our scholars with the skills necessary to have the most opportunities to thrive.
My Project
We are transforming our classroom this year and are excited to seek out a few more items that have piqued our interests. We are seeking various equipment to help improve the technology experiences of our scholars.
These devices will help our scholars use new methods to help build their background knowledge, improve their comprehension, and grow their fluency.
These items will allow students who were absent for a lesson or are not understanding material to watch a video or speech to get background knowledge.
The docking station, chargers, and headphones will allow us to show videos, and allow scholars to listen to individual audio books based on their needs and interests.
