Mrs. Barr from Columbus OH is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 5 Chromebooks and headphones which will provide the opportunity for my students to develop critically needed computer skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My classroom is comprised of a diverse group of students from inner-city neighborhoods. As is the case with many of these areas, almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. These children are coming to our school anxious to learn and ready to apply their skills.
My students, like all 21st century learners, are prone to be more successful when technology is involved in the learning process.
The use of computers will support them as they as they gain access to knowledge acquired through the use of technology.
Third grade students are expected to master computer skills. This includes the ability to navigate the web in order to access knowledge. Many software programs are available to support their success in all content areas - math, reading, science and social studies.
Third grade students are also expected to acquire typing skills in order to complete State tests where they must type three paragraphs to create an essay.
Daily practice on the keyboard is the only way to support them in being successful.
Access to technology is a critical component in education. It is a difficult task to develop skills without the means to practice on a daily basis. These HP Chromebooks and headphones will have a major impact on my students educational success as they will be incorporated as a work station for students to use each day.
Students will use the HP Chromebooks to learn and practice typing skills on sites such as typingweb.com. The computers will be used to access websites such as Flocabulary to enhance vocabulary acquisition. The students will also have time during small group instruction to practice math skills on sites such as ALECKS and Cool Math.
As students progress by mid-year, they will have opportunities to type authentic papers of their own writing. This will better prepare them for test day. Students will also have multiple assignments throughout the year in which research will be necessary.
The HP Chromebooks will be a valuable asset for students to investigate grade level curriculum topics such as energy resources, resource conservation, life cycles, states of matter, local government, agriculture, history and the environment. The computers will also students to access primary sources and enhance map skills.
