About My Students

Jose is an outgoing 8th grade student who saw me working with my robotics class. His question to me was, "Ms., what is this class, and how can I join?" I invited him to be a Mentor to the students and to learn robotics. Jose came to my class and said, "this is Stephen, he will be a good mentor also."

Robotics is new to all of us this year. Our goal is to participate in the First Lego League Robotic competition. As Jose and Stephan started to learn more about the equipment, They started to realize that they still needed more items. The most important items needed are updated computers, external CD drive and wired LAN connections just to be able to program and control the robots once built. Jose, asked if I can think of a way they can get the items needed. I suggested that he write a project explaining what was needed and why.

Computer programming is the way of the future. With the robotic program, the possibility to grow, learn and explore are endless. My students will compete in robotic challenges. Besides building self-esteem, they are learning to foster their development for teamwork, critical thinking, project management, and communication skills required to prepare them to become the next generation of innovators. With the growing societal need to enhance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) instruction in classrooms and beyond, there is a call for integrated learning programs to engage students meaningfully in STEM, especially at the middle school level. They will eventually see that they could have a career in the sciences and make a difference in the world around them.

In Their Own Words

The goal I want to accomplish with this project is for all of us to learn about robotics and to become better in math, science and computer programming. I also want all of us to be able to learn and work on good equipment. I would like us to have the same chance as schools that have more opportunities than our school. This project will allow the students in robotics to learn a new skill and work in the future as mentors. The computers will allow us to learn the new OS and work well.

Being a mentor is empowering to me. First, I am understanding all the planning that I have to do in order to guide the other students through understanding the robots. I also realized that the students, including myself have to learn more about computers and how they work together with outside things. I see that we as a school need to updated equipment and as a robotic class we need it fast. Everyone in this class wants to be in computers or engineering. This is our best opportunity to grow.

This project is important to me because I think students should focus more on math and science. I want to be an engineer. I can't do that playing video games all the time. I need to know how things work. The challenge this project will solve is that we will have a chance to see that programming and working with computers can be fun. We will also learn skills that we will be able to use for the rest of our lives.
