Imagine a teacher hearing: This is my favorite class! A-W-E-S-O-M-E.... MY turn! These are enthusiastic comments that I can imagine my students saying if I am fortunate enough to receive an iPad for the classroom. As a reading teacher, I want them to be successful!
Our school district is located in a community with a high rate of poverty.
All of the students in our PreK-2nd grade building receive free breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. There are some families that do not have a vehicle, telephone, computer, or other items that we consider basics! It is an incredible experience to many young students to be able to learn how to use the computer and other electronic devices so I know that getting to use an iPad would certainly be an incentive to learn to read, to improve skills and to read fluently.
My Project
I would like to have an iPad to use as a resource in my small-group reading intervention classes. Students can work independently to learn, practice, review, and become more skillful in an innovative way. There are many educational Apps that are available for the young children that will teach and reinforce skills applicable to reading/phonics. This tool would allow students to work independently. Using an iPad would also help eye-hand coordination, thinking and other cognitive skills, creativity, positive feedback and reinforcement, to name a few. I am estimating that I will work with 100+ students this year and have very few tools/materials with which to work. This would be a great start to obtaining technology equipment for my students.
Many of my students have very little or no opportunities to learn about technology at home.
Our school provides some computer training to the older students but not to the younger students. Providing them with hands-on experience will equip them to gain knowledge and reinforce their learning in a positive, fun way. They will improve and progress as they use the iPad!
