Techie Third Graders
My students need a computer in the classroom to do their online reading programs, take their online reading tests, and to practice a variety of reading skills.
Our school is located in suburb of a large city and is part of the fourth largest school system in the country. Founded in 1969, the school is a predominantly Hispanic community. The school currently serves Prekindergarten through 5th grade children and has an enrollment of about 520 students.
I currently service 2 English Language Arts classes and 1 Social Studies class with ESOL students and special needs students.
These 2 classes are mostly the general ed population of third grade in this school.
Having an extra computer in the classroom will enable more students to access the technology that provides practice for a variety of reading skills and to online reading programs. These programs will help them become better readers and motivate them to read books on sites like MyOn and Tumblebooks. Furthermore, there are many other online programs we use in our school that are a part of the curriculum, that they will have access to. An extra computer will allow another student to work during centers and free up space so my students don't have to go to another classroom to use a computer. Currently we only have 3 computers that work well.
