Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school attend a Title I school with a large population. The school is located in a large Hispanic area. Most families in our school community are of low socioeconomic level. The school population consists mostly of recently arrived Hispanics from Latin American countries such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Honduras, etc. As a result, most of my students lack proficiency of the English language. Most of the parents work hard to make ends meet, therefore most of these families lack the time and funds to provide exposure to extracurricular activities and experiences. Additionally, my students' families have been recently impacted by the effects of several hurricanes which have impacted our school communities and their counties. These hurricanes have brought much devastation to our area and their home countries. Students' families have experienced difficulties such as flooding, loss of power for extended periods of time and destruction of personal property and homes. Some families have even had to relocate, leaving many memories behind. These issues have compounded the already existing financial and emotional difficulties that my students and their families experience.
My Project
It is my goal to upgrade existing technology in our classroom. The requested laptops will give my student an opportunity to work within their cooperative groups in order to engage in educational activities and programs and create projects. We presently have access to an out of the classroom computer lab where we are required to schedule time to visit. It would be ideal to have a set of upgraded classroom laptops available to my students.
The laptops will provide students with an opportunity to be actively involved in their learning within the classroom setting rather than having to schedule time in the school's computer lab.
The requested laptops will give students an opportunity to efficiently and effectively work on learning activities in a fun, interactive fashion.
It is my hope that my students are able to work in their classroom setting in an organized, structured environment and have a rare opportunity to actively engage in learning activities that will stimulate their curiosity and will quench their thirst for knowledge while staying in the classroom.
