My school's mission is to ensure all K-8 scholars are ambitious, powerful learners and responsible, positive leaders on the path to college and a life of opportunity through excellence in academic and character education. As a first-year school, our founding Scholars and families are located in the Far Eastside of Indianapolis, Indiana. They are a diverse group of Scholars, who each bring an eclectic personality to the classroom daily.
Accessibility in our society is too often taken for granted by some, while too often deprived of many.
There is a two-hour time period each day, during which our Scholars intensely focus on small-group reading instruction.
The tablets will be used to store books that students can read independently, with a partner, or guided. Activities that support reading comprehension will also be stored to the tablets. My students are learning to read, and need exposure to literacy as much as possible.
I serve a 98% free/reduced lunch population, and my kindergarten students come into my class with deficits and gaps over which they have no control.
When engaging in guided reading, my students need as many opportunities to hear, see, and engage with reading as possible. When I am working with a small group of students during literacy, students are split into 2 sub-groups.
One group is working with me, and another group is working independently. The 4-5 students working independently will be using the tablets to engage in reading via technology until they switch back to me.
