Help me give my students an Apple iPad to assist in remote learning instruction.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a technology teacher 11 to 14 year old energetic middle school students that come from diverse economically socially challenged backgrounds in Brooklyn, New York. My student community is academically diverse inclusive of English language learners, special educational and emotional needs. Despite the many challenges my students communally face, they are collectively invested in learning about the innovative prospects of technology. They truly come alive in my class as they love all thing tech, are bright and aspire to be producers of new innovations. It has been a sincere delight to instruct and observe their academic growth and genuine collegial support in my tech lab class and I anticipate a successful future in the tech industry for the community of future techies I teach.
A significant percentage of my students were distributed Apple iPads to continue their academic progress and challenges in instructing my students ensued as I do not own an iPad and I had to assist them in navigating their devices. A great deal of asynchronous time was invested in scouring the internet to develop resources to assist my students in learning how to navigate the interface of their iPads and difficulties in assisting my English language learners and special needs students remain as they require multiple methods to attain the skills needed to utilize their devices.
I then realized that my students limited experience with iPads also affected their other academic areas.
As their technology teacher I believe that it is my responsibility to be able to teach my student tech competency skills across electronic devices that do not only impact my coursework but that across academic areas. Funding of an iPad will greatly impact my ability to increase my students' engagement in their academic pursuits while providing them with needed 21st century career readiness skills.
