My students need 2 Gateway netbooks to increase their access to information and resources throughout the year.
"The knowledge of the world is only to be acquired in the world, and not in a closet." (Lord Chesterfield) This philosophy is what drives my students' learning in my classroom. But our access to the world is limited by our lack of access to technology.
My students are juniors and seniors at a large public high school in a large city in Illinois.
While they are very diverse in their interests and experiences, all of them come from a low socio-economic background, with limited access to resources. They enjoy hands-on, project-based learning and are most engaged when they are able to ask their own questions and seek out their own answers. They are all working to continue their education beyond high school and are eager to learn new skills.
The greater access to the Internet as well as important tools like word processing and presentation creation that netbooks will provide my students will allow them to be stewards of their own learning. Many of my students are not motivated by traditional classroom pedagogy. The increased access to technology will allow them to engage in project-based learning and simulations which will create real-world connections to the content.
In addition, they need access to technologies that will help them develop 21st century skills like inquisition, creativity, collaboration, independence and flexibility, empowering them to be successful going forward.
By fulfilling this request, you will help bridge the digital divide for my students, empowering them to be active participants in the 21st century and opening up countless doors of opportunity for them!
