I have 28 very spirited 3rd graders! My students represent a very wide range or ability levels and interests. Some of my students receive special education services and read at a preschool/ kindergarten level, and some of my students are gifted and read at a 6th grade reading level. I have English Language Learners of all ranges in my classroom and I have students who are bilingual and thriving in both languages.
One thing they all have in common is they love to use technology!
I love that technology serves as the great equalizer! When we use our school's computers for our learning, it levels the playing field because it is easy to differentiate their learning needs in a way that doesn't single them out. They are familiar with technology for playing games and are excited to use technology to learn. My students are learning and applying a growth mindset mentality and are embracing the challenging tasks that third grade brings.
I would like to get Chromebooks for my classroom. My students are going to take the state assessment for the first time in their educational careers. This is a high stakes test for third grade because if they do not pass the reading portion of the test, they cannot move on to 4th grade. We are taking the test on computers this year and I want my students to be very comfortable working on a computer before their testing begins. I also want to be able to offer them more opportunities to work with differentiated learning environments and I have found many fantastic resources for this online. They will be simultaneously working at their pace and on their level, while getting familiar with the technology that will be so vital in deciding their path in life now, and in the future. We currently have limited access to computers and I would like to get a cart and enough Chromebooks to have a 1:2 ratio so that we can use technology throughout the day, instead of once a week.
