My Students

I am a Learning Disabilities Specialist servicing students in grades 1-6. I work in an inner city school in Worcester. We educate and care for students who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Forty-four percent of our students speak a first language other than English (ESL). One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students have a Specific Learning Disability in the area of reading.

Although they have average to above average intelligence, they struggle to acquire basic reading and writing skills. Technology is a tool that allows my students to gain information they can not yet read themselves. My students learn best by seeing , listening and watching.

My Project

The current level of technology my students have access to does not meet their needs as students. They are getting left behind at school. My students deserve the same opportunities as others to build their early reading and writing skills in a fun and interactive way. Additionally, when my students are required to participate in mandated state assessment they don't have the experience with typing their responses or using the simple features on the Chrome Book such as scrolling through or highlighting important parts of a passage they are reading.

Additionally, my learning disabled students learn best when they are not limited to one learning modality.

Chrome books are visual, they provide auditory feedback, and have physical interaction options that my students crave.
