Tech Savvy in Pre-K with Interactive Educational Technology
Help me give my students an Osmo Little Genius kit and other hands-on learning tools made to work with our classroom iPads for interactive learning using technology.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are three to five year olds who attend a Pre-K classroom at a DC public school. They have been diagnosed with autism or other communication-related challenges. Our self-contained, special education classroom is part of an elementary school on the city's list of targeted schools with the highest needs. Regardless of these "labels," my students and their families consistently prove what is possible with hard work and dedication. They are resilient, creative, curious, funny and hard-working.
My students are capable of amazing things, but often need specialized materials or a slightly different approach to instruction.
Throughout the day, they practice academic, social and communication skills through one-on-one and small group instruction. We use familiar themes and topics to explore new vocabulary and concepts through pretend play, as well as more formal teacher led instruction. We also use these same themes to choose math and reading activities to meet students' individualized education program (IEP) goals. Everything in my classroom is highly customized to each student's individual needs, with each student's daily schedule and lesson content looking slightly different.
My Project
My students need exposure to using technology for more than just watching videos or taking pictures. As they continue throughout school and into adulthood, skills such as typing and proficient use of touch-screen technology will be important for my students’ independence. Osmo has recently expanded its well-known interactive software for iPads to include games that teach skills for young learners, like number identification or letter name and sound recognition. The requested resources include physical props such as letters, numbers and shapes that are made to interact with specific touch screen apps. These will allow my students to interact with our tablets in a way that is tangible and supports their need for visual and hands-on learning. Students can play a variety of games practicing everything from early spatial skills and fine motor control, to spelling and counting. With a pen made specifically for use with our tablets, students can practice pre-writing skills in a way that is both functional (just like holding a real writing utensil) and highly motivating.
My students love technology and are very motivated to work for time on the iPads, but I want to make sure their tech time is truly educational!
These tools will help my students expand their understanding of how technology can be used while practicing key skills at the same time. I am looking forward to having new ways of showing students that technology can be more than just “sit and watch” entertainment, while also working on age appropriate skills my students need to practice.
