Tech Needs to Better Prepare Math Students

My Project

I teach math and AVID to 9th graders at a high school in Portland, Oregon. Our school is among the most diverse schools in the state of Oregon. 67% of the student body belong to ethnic groups other than white and 63% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. There are over 30 languages spoken at our high school.

The switch to online learning during the pandemic took a lot from all of us.

Our school lost over half of our calculators when supplies were sent home. We had two cohorts of students graduate and others moved to different areas - taking our calculators with them. Currently, each high school math class has 10 calculators that students share. We need class sets of calculators to give students the tools they need to be successful and our school does not have the funding to do it without you.

Putting calculators in the hands of every student gives each student the tool they need to solve problems. Many students are discouraged by computations and algebraic manipulations and calculators help ease that stress, allowing more students to solve problems and appreciate the power and value of mathematics in the world today.
