Help me give my students technology to access to college, FAFSA, ACCES-VR, and Summer Youth applications as well as career inventories/surveys so they may continue their path to success!
Our school is a Title I high school for students with disabilities in the Bronx. Many of our students come from single parent/guardian homes with limited to no access to materials or outside experiences. Our school has a 15:1 high school inclusion program housed within our neighboring general education high school. These students are on track to receive high school diplomas, and many of which go on to attend college, get jobs, and become independent. The students take pride in their work and achievements. It is necessary for these students to learn academics, social skills, and other necessary skills to be a part of their community once they graduate. By having certain technology and supplies, we are able to better teach and serve our students.
Technology is necessary for completing steps towards an individual's future.
In order for students to gain post graduate opportunities, they must have access to the technology necessary to fill out applications. With the help of teachers and guidance counselors, students will be able to apply for college, programs, and begin their search towards their future.
My Project
Having technology that the students can easily access on an individual basis is critical for college and career readiness. Not all students have access to laptops or technology at home to continue their path post graduation. And if they do, their parents/guardians are not sure how to help their child through the process. This is where the teachers and guidance counselors come into play. We can use these laptops during the school day with the students to help them along in their process so they may continue to succeed.
These laptops will give students the technology needed to access career interest inventories and career surveys to help them determine early on in high school what path they would like to take.
They will have the ability to continue to research important information and what it will take to pursue these careers. It will also give them the access to fill out applications for summer youth programs and jobs to get them started.
Most of the students in the inclusion program continue their education with college and in order to apply for college, these students need access to technology to complete applications and FAFSA applications to help them get the funding they need to attend their college of choice. Other students may choose to attend ACCES-VR, which is a program to help students with disabilities obtain and maintain a job, as well as support those who are living independently.
