Help me give my students a chance to explore the field of robotics. Lego Mindstorms is a great curriculum piece that I use in the technology classroom so that students can learn to build, program and work robots.
My school is a Title I school, and my students come from a variety of different backgrounds that range from financially disadvantaged to upper class families. Students are very motivated and eager to learn, but often do not have the resources or experiences that help them achieve better in technology and robotics. Hands-on activities can help teach a concept better than a textbook alone. Our school has a faculty that strives to support and encourage all of our children's learning as they work to be prepared for future education and careers, as well as responsible and productive citizens of the community.
In the technology classroom I like to use hands on activities for student learning. When a student is needing to experience real world training, a robotic kit like Lego is used. When I took over the classroom I am in, many of the kits were damaged with pieces missing. So when students need to find parts they get frustrated and often give up. A completed kit allows students to experience the programming, building and controlling a robot with a particular purpose. This in turn gives them the real world experience and sparks their interest in fields of employment that they might not experience elsewhere.
