Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a school with a high poverty rate where some of my students begin school with a traumatic background. Despite their background being a little rough, most of my students are excited to be at school and have a personal drive to learn. In my classroom we work on building the social-emotional sides of our brains and talking about our feelings. Most of my students are very active and love taking part in brain boost activities, mindfulness and conversations. My school has departmentalized our third grade which means teachers are able to focus their teaching and become experts in their subject. I teach third grade reading, science and writing and incorporate integrated tech lessons using our BLEND platform (also known as Canvas).
There is something very special about our school and anyone who has ever worked, taught or learned at our school has realized it!
The school community is one that has a great reputation. Past alumni return and enroll their children at our school because they loved it so much when they were children and because they know the teachers and staff are committed to helping children succeed.
My Project
My school district has recently moved to incorporate blended models of learning into our curriculum. This means we are encouraged to provide lessons through online/digital format. This year I have learned a lot about blended learning and positive effects it can have on student's because of the element of choice that blended learning provides.
Blended learning can provide the opportunity for teachers to have more time in the classroom for things like small groups and even more important, it provides students the opportunity to learn coursework tailored to their needs and academic levels.
One problem I have run into when trying to integrate BLENDed learning into my classroom is the lack of access to technology.
I will use Chromebooks and tablets to allow technology access to more students at once in order to provide consistent integrative online/digital science and writing lessons.
