I teach a great group of students in the social-emotional/behavioral disabilities program at my school in MA. We are part of the Boston Public Schools system and many students are on IEPs or are considered English language learners. Many will be from immigrant/refugee families. Students are part of the free lunch program.
My students are amazing.
I bet every teacher says that on this site. It's almost like we're parents, and we all think our kids are the best. Mine truly are.
My students come to school every day, knowing it is a safe place to take risks and achieve great things. Some are fighting with emotions that they can't control.
Others are learning how to identify strategies to overcome their disabilities, while we teach them that nothing can hold them back with hard work and determination. Others are just looking for a safe, warm place with a hug and food to put in their bellies.
My Project
The journey continues! I am asking for two additional Chromebooks to help move us toward becoming a one-to-one classroom.
Technology is important in our inclusive classroom to help me ensure I am meeting each and every student's individual needs.
Even though we are an ELA classroom, it is important to incorporate basic STEM skills every day. Students will use this Chromebook to: access Google Classroom, conduct research, check their grades, and more. During senior year, students will make sure to have a working draft of their resume, a personal Google account for email and documents, and a complete personal statement. It is clear to me that students need to have access to the internet and be taught how to be computer-literate (which is different from smart phone-literate!). I am also teaching a Senior Elective that will touch on job searches and different multimedia presentations. These Chromebooks are definitely needed!
The world is developing rapidly, and it is important to make sure my students are not left behind. Basic computer skills are a necessity in today's world. Thank you for reading!
