Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher-librarian, I get to share my love of the written word, create a culturally sensitive, learner-centered environment and teach research and 21st-century skills all at the same time.
Our school serves PreK through sixth grade students serving the academic, emotional and mental needs of nearly 625 students.
The average teaching experience is 13.4 year for our staff. Approximately 81% of our students are on the free/reduced lunch program. Twenty-nine percent of our students are English Language Learners. We are proud of our attendance rate of 94.3%. Our mobility rate is 9.6%. At CVES, Cougars R.O.A.R. – Respect Others Accept Responsibility!
My Project
The last 20 months has been rough, everyone has experienced isolation, frustration and lack of social skills. Board games will give my students the time to clear their minds then be ready to learn in the classroom.
Board games offer kids meta-messages about life: Your luck can change in an instant, for better or for worse.
But in addition to teaching them that nothing is guaranteed, board games are a good way to encourage kids of different ages to team up and work together — something they'll need to do throughout life.
Students need time to chat with a friend(s) while learning to take turns, waiting, sharing, and sportsmanship. Many of the games selected are for 2-4 players to strategize, communicate, and either succeed or try again.
