My students need 1 iPad in order to access educational apps and enhance their learning. Students with disabilities often experience greater success with technology!
Help me provide assistive technology for students with disabilities! Technology can be a great resource for students with special needs. With access to countless education applications, an iPad would allow me as a teacher to choose those programs most relevant to the way my students learn.
I am a Resource Specialist at an elementary school in Roseville, CA.
The elementary school at which I work and where I call home is comprised of 29% socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and 10% of the student population are students with disabilities. The school's vision is that "Our school will be a center of learning, where teachers and students thrive in an ever changing world." This could not be more true; the teachers and students work together to create a culture of positive behavior and academic integrity. However, academically, students struggle on a daily basis. In addition to my special education caseload, I help the Intervention teacher with students who are below benchmark at each grade level (25% of each grade). Here at our school, we strive to: "Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Productive."
My Project
I work with students with a variety of disabilities; including specific learning disabilities, writing disabilities, communication disorders, autism, etc. I will tailor the education applications on the iPad to fit the specific needs of each child within my Resource Specialist Program. It is in this way that I will promote success and learning for my students. There are a variety of software programs and educational applications that will enable by students to reach their specific goals: whether it be letter/sound identification, reading fluency, reading comprehension, or a story board communicator for my students with severe autism. Technology, such as an iPad, can open the door to a whole new world of learning, particularly for students where so many doors are often closed.
Students with disabilities benefit from utilizing technology in the classroom.
Oftentimes, technology can act as an "equalizer," by allowing students with even profound disabilities to communicate and/or learn through educational applications or software. Additionally, students have a motivation to learn because they can see tangible success through their individualized education.
