Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What if you were to wake up in in a foreign country where they speak a language totally unknown to you? What if you were hungry, cold, upset, having a bad day or needed medical services? What if you wanted to say hi to someone? How would you communicate your needs, how would you convey the message?
My students face these challenges every single moment of their lives.
I serve 6, soon to be 7, beautiful children with special needs. My students have all been diagnosed with severe mental retardation and many face multiple disabilities, a few have been diagnosed with autism. All of them are non-verbal and come from families struggling with economic hardship. Our special day class is nestled in the heart of a general education campus, and as a class we strive to fit in with the rest of our community. Day in and day out my assistants and I make every effort to help them communicate and connect with the rest of the students and school personnel. We have a great school and a caring, supportive community but…what happens when they leave our school? The main idea behind my curriculum is to develop basic life skills and language development. With the support of donorschoose.org I hope to be able to raise the funds necessary to supply my classroom with the elements needed to help us in this endeavor. I know that we can count on technology to teach my students to talk. Please help me help my students!
My Project
The go talk is a wonderful augmentative device to help students express their needs and wants.
We are also requesting a card system to help develop their language skills.
The weighted vest will aid in concentrating, this is extremely helpful for those students in need of sensory stimulation.
Your donations will certainly make a positive impact in the lives of these boys and girls, some of them will even be able to learn to produce sounds and vocalizations, and those who are not physically able to speak, at least would be able to communicate with the help of devices or picture exchange programs.
