Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of our High School students have been classified, at one time in their schooling, as English Language Learners. The majority currently qualify for free and reduced lunch, meaning their families are low-income. Many of them are on IEPs or 504 plans; more than I could ever count are students who have experienced trauma in their lives - trauma from community, family, and adults in their lives. In short, they do not have the resources to meet their needs. This crowd-sourcing goes a long way.
My Project
While this technology will be open to all of my students - like Ward Stern, who is also posting for printers - I am a part of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), a college preparatory program. We do not have adequate tech resources to help students prepare and apply for college. For instance, my AVID juniors are starting to draft their college essays. We do not have consistent access to computers. But the students have cell phones. So their phones will give them access to Google Classroom and the new keyboards will allow them to type their essays quickly. The printer - also like Ward Stern's post - will be for students to print materials needed for school and job or college applications.
