Do you remember the thrill of heading to your physical education class? Always wondering what you'd be learning and how your body would move that day. With our current situation, my students want and need the opportunity to move and be active, now more than ever.
My students love to move, and through movement and gameplay, they are able to improve themselves in all facets: socially/emotionally, cognitively, and physically.
Physical education class provides students with a unique opportunity to learn these skills, as we continually perform hands-on, minds-on activities. I am the physical education teacher at a K-6 elementary school in a Wisconsin village, and over 50% of my students receive free or reduced-cost lunches. My subject allows me to teach children personal and social responsibility. Each day a student enters my classroom, they are provided ample opportunities to improve their conflict resolution skills and value class rule #1 - "respect yourself, your classmates, and your teacher."
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will allow them to learn about the importance of teamwork. The animal movements block and step balance turtle shells will be used to teach my youngest students how to work together and move their bodies over obstacles. We always do an animal locomotor movement activity for K-2 students and this will really increase their level of excitement! The “run mat” will provide students K-6 the opportunity to get in step with others and work as a squad. Furthermore, it can be used for field days as a fun rotation activity. The twelve-foot parachute will let our smallest students work together and enjoy a wide variety of locomotor and non-locomotor movements. By affording my students these unique experiences they will better understand how unity and teamwork can lead to successful outcomes. The concept of cooperation will lead to student successes far beyond physical education class. I would truly appreciate it if you would make these team-building activities a reality for my students.
