Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 800 students in grades K-8 who come from a high poverty/low income neighborhood, and one of the most historic in the city. One hundred percent of the student population qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Football is a sport at our school that teaches students about teamwork and dedication.
Our students do not have many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities and there is a small budget to fund sports such as football. Our coaches are teachers who believe that students should have the opportunity to learn sports at this age, not only to build the life skills necessary for success but to introduce them to something that they can continue to participate in high school and beyond.
My Project
The materials in this project will allow our athletes to build strength, stamina, and skills in football. Having more footballs will allow for efficient practice and pinnies will allow our team to easily distinguish one team from another during scrimmages and drills. A blocking dummy and agility ladder will be used to build strength, endurance and agility.
Dedication and teamwork are skills students will use after they leave our school and long after they graduate high school.
Funding is limited for coaching staff and supplies, but we are dedicated to providing students with experiences such as sports which help them succeed in life. We enjoy getting phone calls from past students who share their success stories of earning a spot on a varsity team in high school and college. Projects such as this allow us to have more success stories take place in our community.
