My Students

My students have been dealing with a lot of anxiety this year. They have struggled with making friends and working together more than other students I have taught in my 10 years of teaching. I think a big reason for this is from the effects of Covid. Covid has created a lot of fear and isolation in families and communities and students are struggling to navigate these things.

Instead of reading or doing bell work pages at the beginning of class, I have been having my students play together.

They create, work together, and laugh. All of these things help create a welcoming environment to learn.

By providing materials for my students to play together their stress seems lower, they support each other in their learning more, and they seem happier overall.

My Project

My students have really struggled behaviorally this year. I think a lot of it has to do with the fear of Covid, loss of family jobs, deaths of loved ones, and masks covering student and teacher expressions-lessening connections.

I have been providing supplies to help them learn to work together and build their social skills.

I have also been trying to provide things in my classroom to help students self-regulate and get into a healthy zone to learn. For these reasons, I have chosen items that will provide opportunities to play with peers, problem solve, and release energy.

I am really excited for the opportunity to get these items for my students. I know it will have a big impact on their social-emotional experience at school.
