My students need GIANT-sized interactive games, like Connect Four, checkers, and colored Jenga-like blocks to stay active, engaged, and learn social skills through play.
This upcoming 2018-2019 school year, my students will be merging three unique school buildings into one Intermediate Elementary building. This is a big change for the district and the community.
My students consist of 700 nervous, excited, diverse, and socially-awkward tweens getting ready to meet and mingle with their new classmates.
While my students live in a seemingly heterogeneous community, many of them come from vastly different socioeconomic backgrounds. As first and second graders, they were oblivious to these differences; however, as they get older, their differences are more recognized.
I want out students to embrace their differences and create an atmosphere of inclusion as they embark on their physical, emotional, and academic journey together.
My Project
As students from three elementary schools merge together next year, I am looking for creative and active ways that students can get to know each other. Many of the students already know each other from playing on local sports teams, but what about the students who are not athletes or cannot participate in extra-curricular activities??
The use of giant-sized games allows students (athletes and non-athletes) to be active and engaged while learning social skills and how to initiate conversations with new peers.
These games can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments which is a tremendous "plus" in inconsistent Pittsburgh weather!
