Do you remember when kids played outside every day until it was time for dinner? Remember when those same students also had an hour of P.E. multiple times each week at school? Those same children knew how to use their imagination, persevered through difficult problems socially and academically, and accepted failure as a necessary part of the journey. Times have changed, and unfortunately, those changes have impacted the amount of time children are physically active. Dual-working households, safety concerns, and electronics are only a few of the reasons our children are less active than they need to be.
Our children need more opportunities for physical activity at school!
As educators, we can't control what our students do after they leave our classroom. However, we can teach healthy lifestyles and help them implement skills and habits that will lead to healthier children, families, and communities. We can teach team building activities that encourage cooperation, social skills, and grit. Team sports are crucial for learning these skills.
My Project
Currently, my school does not sponsor or provide any sports related extra-curricular activities for students. Additionally, students only attend P.E. for 30 minutes each week. I have recently proposed and received approval from the school to begin an after-school sports program, but the school lacks funding to launch the program.
Donations will provide the basic equipment needed to launch a successful after-school sports program for students.
The equipment needed to launch our program includes volleyballs and basketballs and bags to carry and store the balls. These items will provide enough supplies to host eight 6-week long programs during our school year.
