My Project

As students are returning to school, the classrooms are getting fuller than ever. I see it first-hand as I teach 5th grade English -- 3 classes, with 36 students in each very crowded class. Teaching to one large group in 50 minutes has always been challenging -- but now with COVID-19 and the pause of in-person instruction that they've had, the differences in levels between students is huge. Due to this, students crave and need a teacher that can individualize instruction to not only meet their academic, but emotional needs as well -- giving them the tools as well as the confidence and encouragement to succeed. They need a little "me" time.

The gift of 14 Amazon Fire tablets and privacy dividers will allow me to work with a smaller group of students (10 or less) on one concept while the others are actively engaged in either reading (with the tablets) or quietly working on writing or grammar (distraction free with the dividers, making classroom management easier).

I have been very proud of this group of students this year -- acclimating back to in-person learning has not been easy, but they have exemplified the hallmarks of a great team: they help one another, they're invested in the success of the entire class, they communicate and they are learning to resolve conflicts constructively. Still, that's not the whole picture - each student is an individual with unique needs. We often hear that there is no "I" in team -- but we can't forget that there is an "m" and an "e". These gifts will give the students that needed "me" time --strengthening each individual and, in the end, benefitting the whole class as they continue to come back strong while learning and growing in their pursuit of literacy, grammar and writing.
