Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day with my teams include a warm up and stretch routine followed by intense practice of skills and drills. The ultimate goal for my teams is to get the most out of each player's potential. My favorite thing I say to my students is to "try your hardest!"
There are a good percentage of players on my teams on the free lunch program, as many of the students come from low-income, urban areas.
However, my school is in a unique situation because it has three magnet schools on the same campus. The three schools include highly gifted arts/tech, cinema arts, and environmental studies.
Students on my sports teams range from highly gifted to special education. Ethnically, the population is a mix of Hispanic/Latino, Armenian, White/Caucasian, and other (including Black, Asian, etc.). Economically, there is an eclectic mix of low-income, urban students with middle and upper class students because the neighborhood is extremely diverse and economic classes change within a few miles distance. Players are very respectful toward each other and authority. Many are very focused and on a college track while others need guidance, but are thoughtful and will listen.
My Project
There are several teams that will benefit from this equipment. Lunch time sports, competitive teams and after school teams need equipment. There are many students in the programs that I coach and oversee. Unfortunately, many of our players lack basic physical education skills coming from the local elementary schools. Throwing and catching are basic skills that many of my student have not learned. Many don't understand basic throwing concepts such as "opposition," and throwing while stepping with the same foot as their throwing arm.
I'd like to use various balls to incorporate different throwing and catching games, so that the teams can apply these skills in competition. There are plenty of lead up games students can learn that incorporate throwing or kicking for distance and accuracy. I'd like for students to be able to throw in volume using different balls with partners so that they get several repetitions. These lead right into our team handball league and soccer leagues after school.
Teaching the concept of throwing, catching, and kicking is also a great lead up to striking with an implement so that players can enjoy sports such as tennis, badminton, and table tennis, in addition to the sports that they are already in.
Students who have success in these skills are more apt to try other sports and participate because they'll have a foundation of basics. Students who experience success will have more active lifestyles as adults.
