Newcomer schools across the country serve some of the most fragile students in our schools. Many of these students have already struggled through circumstances we all wish no children had to endure. And when they start school in the United States, while language can be the biggest obstacle for them, there are typically many other barriers that can get in their way as well.
Students at our school have all been in our country for less than a year and they are at our school because they speak little to no English.
While teaching them to speak English, we also teach them content such as math, science, social studies, music, art, phys ed, etc. Our students love learning just like all children do and we are always on the lookout for more ways to support them in their learning.
When our students come to music class, they find that music truly is a universal language. They love my class where I focus on instruments such as ukuleles, Orff instruments, drums, and we also have a rock band program that includes drumset, electric guitar, bass, and keyboards!
My Project
All of our students at Newcomer are in an Advisory with approximately 10-15 other students and one teacher. The main goal of our Advisories is to make certain that every student has at least one adult in the building who knows them really well. One of the best activities to get to know students is to do team building games and activities.
All of the items in this project will be used to do team building activities and games to build community with our Advisory students.
Students love playing games and they love working with each other to accomplish tasks. They also enjoy a little bit of competition every now and then as well and some of these activities can be competitive. Having fun together and playing games allows the Advisory teachers to make fun memories with our students all while we are team building as well.
Special bonds are created in Advisories both between the teacher and each student but also between the students. It is always fun to see which student is better at spatial reasoning or which student can do puzzles really well or which student emerges as a natural leader. Having these team building games and items will help us all have fun while also getting to know each other, too.
