Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach at Dodge Renaissance Academy in Chicago. We have a 90%+ amount of students receiving free or reduced lunch. I am fortunate enough, however, to be in a school that has laptop carts with enough laptop computers to serve a whole class. Our students LOVE using Microsoft Word to write their stories, biographies, essays, and research reports. They are becoming quite proficient at typing, so it's been a really great way to give them a new way (and more and more these days, the ONLY way) to be authors. However, each laptop cart is shared by the entire floor; there is no way to always have the same laptop each time we use them (about 2-3 times a week). So the students are not able to save their work to the actual computers, and you can imagine what comes next: I am running around the room with my own flash drive, trying to save everyone's work, and then during the next session, doing the exact same thing trying to give their writing pieces back to them, wasting precious time! It would give them such a sense of ownership to have their own flash drives, as well as solving the logistical problem of saving their work, making it easier to revise and edit their pieces. In essence, this turns them into more authentic authors. The students will keep their flash drives in a central box that I will keep in my closet to be safe and never misplaced. I want to take advantage of the technology at my school, and this will help me take FULL advantage for my students. I also want my students to have the technological advances that students in the suburbs probably take for granted! I would like half of a class set (each drive will be shared by 2 students) of the most inexpensive flash drives I can find, for a total of 14. Thank you so much for considering this.
