Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This quote from writing expert, Lucy Calkins, illustrates my hopes for this project. She writes, "For me, it is essential that children are deeply involved in writing, ... and that they perceive themselves as authors." I will use the iPad to deeply engage my students with their writing.

My school is a wonderful place!

It is culturally and linguistically diverse, as well as being considered to be a "highest poverty school." Many of my students lack the basics, such as food, medical and dental care, and warm clothing, but, when they enter the school building, all of that strife seems to dissolve. They are eager to develop their literacy skills!

My Project

My students are learning to write Persuasive/Opinion pieces, First, they need to locate research or other text-types written by experts on their topics. They will then cite evidence from those texts to craft their own high-quality writing pieces. My students will access the research about their topics on the iPad.

My students have been working on writing since the beginning of the year.

Now, they are ready to take their writing to the next step: to write about their reading. The skill of using evidence from texts in writing is an important part of creating learners who are college and career ready. With effective writing instruction, my students will be prepared for entrance into college or for entrance into a career. Thus, my project will have a profound impact on my students' lives.
