Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fourth graders in a low socioeconomic status area. Our school has a population of students where 94.1% are socioeconomically disadvantaged. More than three-fourths of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. In spite of their circumstances, they still come to school ready, enthusiastic, and yearning for new knowledge.
While many of my students lack resources at home, they strive to excel in the classroom.
It is not uncommon for my students to want to stay in during recess or after school to enhance their own learning. Our community rallies for and values education and is supportive of our school and our students.
My Project
This class set of books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. Every student book that is placed in my classroom library is treated with love and care, and students are thankful for the opportunities to read. This book has been chosen with my students in mind. In today's classroom, teachers are not only required to teach children how to read, write, and do math, but we need to teach children how to be good people as well.
I want to do a novel study on Wonder, by RJ Palacio, to use as a read aloud modeling tool to demonstrate reading fluency, while showing my students the importance of acceptance, understanding, and choosing kindness through the main character's story.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and this class set of books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word, while reminding them always choose kindness.
