When students sit on stability balls, both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their bodies centered on the balls. And when the brain is stimulated, it's more focused on learning. Not only is the brain better suited to processing new information, young minds are also better in all aspects!
I love my job and I love my school!
At Roosevelt Elementary there is an emphasis on creativity, critical thinking and opportunities to share student work publicly. The students have the opportunity to become arts literate, able to self-reflect and able to critique the arts. We build community by making learning interesting/meaningful. I teach critical thinking, and other basic academic. I also incorporate dance, drama, music and the visual arts to enhance the core curriculum.
I want to help every child reach his/her full potential academically and in the arts by providing the best environment possible.
My Project
I plan to provide students with an alternative seating option traditional seating. I want students to have the choice between the yoga balls, bean bag chairs and traditional desk chairs. I want them to have many unique ways of getting comfortable. They can wiggle while they work and have the ability to pay attention for longer periods.
These yoga balls will increase my students enthusiasm for reading and other desk work and paying attention in general.
Subconscious mental activity lies at the core of the science behind the balls' success, experts say. "Just by using their core muscles more, they're flipping (their cortex) on," says Dr. John Ratey, a Harvard University professor and author of books including "Driven To Distraction" and "Spark." As a teacher, I will do anything I can to increase learning and engagement!
