Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of us don't remember using technology or working with computers when we were children. Times have changed and classrooms are a lot different now. Wouldn't it be great for kids to learn more reading and math skills on an interactive Smart Board? In my class, they can have that opportunity!
My class is located in a low income, high poverty area in the center of the San Fernando Valley.
My students face many challenges, and technology is just not a priority of many of our parents who are struggling. Over 85% of my students are English Language Learners and do not have computer access at home. Many of their parents simply cannot afford to own and maintain personal computers. Many work long, late hours and are not able to take their kids to the public library to use the public computers. Therefore, often their only chance to learn about technology is in my classroom. I am hoping to instill an ease, a comfort level with my students, so when they are given access to a computer, they can use it to their best advantage.
My Project
With the donation of the math and reading comprehension software, I will be able to install it on our classroom laptop computer, which would then be projected onto my Smart Board. The Smart Board is an amazing technological tool where the students can go up to the Board, and using pens or their fingers, literally write on the Board as if they are writing on a television screen. The kids absolutely love it!
Having educational software to use with it would be all the more meaningful. With the use of the software, the kids will be engaged and excited to learn the different strategies of reading comprehension that they so badly need reinforcement with. They will learn that cause and effect, making inferences, and more, can be easy and accessible for them to learn. And math? They will love seeing the concepts that are often so difficult, such as multiplication, projected onto a large screen. They will love to be able to show their knowledge by answering questions right on the Board.

They will see that learning can be both educational and exciting by using technology to reinforce the skills that are often difficult for them. At the same time, they will learn how to navigate through software that they will not have the opportunity to do at home. They will have a program that they can be excited about and tell their families about. My third graders will love using this year after year on the Smart Board.
