The students I teach live in an area that revolves around the seafood industry. In it's early years, the area thrived with tourism, but the devastation felt by a number of hurricanes, have greatly impacted its progress. The average income ranges from about $40,000-$60,000. Many of these kids will be the first generation to go to college.
There are over 1800 students at our school.
Of those students, 184 receive services through our special education department. These students have a range of disabilities. To address these disabilities, students receive individualized education plans to address any deficits.
Many students need more non traditional items to help them be successful in class. For example, many of our students have severe reading disabilities. They would require technology such as a reader to help them. These readers can be extremely costly and the school district may or may not be able to purchase. This leads a lot of our special education students at a disadvantage.
The items I have chosen for this project will be used in several ways. First, I would like to incorporate virtual reality lessons in my Life Skills class. This class is for disabled students who are on an alternative diploma pathway. I could conduct virtual field trips and allow them to role play in real life scenarios. The sound bar will be used to along with my smartboard to provide quality sound when using videos or interactive lessons. Finally, the charging station is for students to use during class so that their devices will stay fully charged during instruction
