Mrs. Bertucci from Chicago IL is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a Sony digital camera and Economy Cassette Listening Center with six headphones.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The use of technology not only intrigues and captures the attention of my fifth grade students, but also provides them with alternate ways of learning.
My students love to listen to stories, but struggle to read them by themselves because a large number of them are reading below grade level. A listening center would provide my struggling students with the opportunity to strengthen their comprehension skills as they listen to stories on tape. The listening center would be used, three times a week, as one of the reading centers my students visit. They would be encouraged to follow the words in the book as the narrator reads the story so that they may strengthen their fluency ability as well. Also, my students would benefit from using a digital camera to express themselves as they have demonstrated interest in photography during a social studies unit on inventions. My students truly enjoy capturing photos during science experiments, math activities, and any endeavor done in groups. Therefore, a classroom digital camera, which would be kept in the room, would provide my students with the chance to take pictures when ever they would like to.
As you can see, a listening center would benefit my students’ comprehension and fluency abilities as they listen to stories being read to them. Also, the listening center would be beneficial because it models phrasing and fluency, exposes students to a variety of story structures (genres), provides access of higher text levels, strengthens listening skills, fosters independence, and can be the sources of book talk. Therefore, a listening center would truly benefit each and every student in my classroom. My students have been exposed to digital and video images all of their lives, which has resulted in a need for visual literacy skills that rivals the need for traditional literacy. Using digital cameras in the classroom perfectly addresses the need for visual literacy activities. Digital pictures are immediate, versatile, colorful, interactive and successfully engage the attention of today’s students. Nothing could be more relevant to a child’s life than a picture he or she has taken, or a picture of a place they have been. Therefore, using digital cameras will stimulate and motivate my students.
You will make it possible for my students to recognize the importance of technology as I create activities that meet the needs of my students. They will use the listening center regularly to strengthen different literacy skills and simply enjoy listening to stories on tape. They will use the digital camera as a tool to help them explore and understand different subjects. Your help will not only capture the attention and enthusiasm of my students, but also provide them with alternative ways of learning and expressing themselves.
