My students are diverse in their ethnic backgrounds. They come from lower S.E.S (socioeconomic status) families, the students many times are in charge of caring for younger siblings after school or attend our sites after school program.
72% of our students rely on free or reduced lunch to provide a healthy meal at school.
Making school a consistent, safe place for them to interact with their peers as well as get many of their basic needs met while receiving an academic experience to prepare them for the 21st Century.
Technology integration is essential for students. Many of students' in this community do not have access to technology at home or their families cannot afford to have internet capabilities at home. In my classroom, we use computers to access Google Classroom as well as many educational platforms. I have also taken it upon myself to teach my students coding using Code.org and SCRATCH.
One to one access will give the students more opportunities to engage with technology in meaningful and challenging ways, which will enhance their academic experience.
In order for them to be prepared for their future, they must be career and college ready. Access to technology will provide this opportunity and give them an advantage when competing with their peers.
