This is my very first year of teaching, and I wasn't sure what to expect from the school I was going to be working for. In my first week with my students, I gave them a survey and was so surprised and excited to see how many of my students say they love math! I work in a middle school with a diverse population of students who are passionate about learning and love hands-on projects and activities.
Designing interactive and exploratory lessons to help my students learn through making their own discoveries has been one of the biggest goals for my classes.
Math is important to me, and I believe no matter what my students eventually go into, they will use problem-solving and thinking skills they learn through these lessons.
My Project
As a math teacher, most of the class period I am working examples on the whiteboard. This effectively traps me at the front of the classroom leaving out students at the back of the classroom. With an iPad, I will be able to project example problems and notes up on the board while moving around the classroom. One important part of classroom management is proximity. If students are misbehaving or off task, just being near them helps them to behave appropriately. Not only will the iPad help me to be near students who need help to behave, but it will also enable me to see how each of my students in understanding the lesson. Finally, by taking notes electronically, I can upload the day’s lesson for students who missed class that day or other students who need a refresher in order to enable them to learn the concepts and complete the assignments. An iPad will help me improve my teaching and classroom management skills and improve my students’ learning.
