I currently teach two amazing groups of Kindergartners, the "Donald Ducks" and the "Mickey Mouses." As the English teacher of a side-by-side dual-language program, both my teaching partner and I have a homeroom class. We see each group of students every other day. In my room, they learn in English, while in her room, they learn in Spanish.
My students represent a microcosm of the beautiful diversity that is America.
They are 4 and 5 year-olds of every race, religion, and ethnicity. A majority of my students are Hispanic, and many are second language learners. Some students only speak Spanish, while others are fluently bilingual. I also have students, in both groups, who are native English speakers. These students are eagerly beginning their bilingual journeys, which they will be able to continue throughout all of their schooling.
My students keep me on my toes—they make me laugh, they challenge me, and they teach me something new each day.
My Project
I currently have two bulky wooden pieces of furniture that take up a large portion of my classroom's meeting area—one is a big book holder and the other, an easel. Both of these items are secondhand and have begun to fall apart. As a teacher in a relatively small space, I am always looking for ways to rearrange, reorganize, and consolidate.
With the help of your generous donations, my meeting area can transform into a functional and practical learning hub where my students will gather to build a variety of literacy skills.
The Copernicus Expanded Storage Royal Reading/ Writing Center is a movable easel with storage and a magnetic dry-erase surface. This easel, paired with the School Smart Adjustable Pocket Chart, will be used to enhance our Balanced Literacy curriculum. This single set-up will provide a place for making words with magnetic letters, practicing sight word sentences, writing letters, engaging in shared reading of poems, songs, and big books, co-authoring stories, drawing detailed illustrations, and storing multi-sensory materials.
Getting these important supplies would allow me to eliminate the non-functional pieces of furniture in my room, thus creating a more comfortable, inviting, and usable learning space.
