Some students escape to the next grade level without the appropriate foundation. At some point, it is nearly impossible to catch up. Students that are not on grade level exhibit low self-esteem which can affect a student's entire school career. The buck stops here. Dropping out is not an option.
This is my fifth year at this school but the students have the same issues as the school I left.
As a veteran teacher of 16 years, I have taken on the challenge. During the beginning of the year assessments, the staff usually notices that these types of students are not reading at grade level. The low socioeconomic level of these students doesn't help. How can a student do his/her homework without electricity? How can a student listen to a lesson when his/her stomach is louder than the teacher? Hopefully, as a Kindergarten teacher in this type of environment, I can be the vessel that can stop the cycle of poverty and lay a foundation of success.
These materials will make a difference in my students' learning by allowing them to have various opportunities to practice their math skills. There are a plethora of exhilarating math and reading programs on the internet.
Literacy and mathematics are a pertinent part of our daily lives and children need the foundation in order to grasp these concepts.
In the twenty first century students no longer only learn with pencil and paper. Technology is the new wave in order to expand their minds towards coding and STEM majors. I believe in starting in Kindergarten with teaching everything that they will need to learn in order to be successful in life. Literacy (phonics) and mathematics are just a start!
I will use this laptop in a workstation for all students to take turns to work at their own levels. It will vastly improve the quality of my teaching and classroom culture for all of my students to succeed.
