This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Children who are deaf have an extraordinary challenge to learn language if nobody signs to them early in life. Many of my students come to my class with little or no language skills at all. Many of these students don't even know they have a name!! It is my job to break down that communication barrier and to give names to the everyday objects in our lives that we take for granted. There is a set of learning tools on the market that would make this challenge a bit easier. They are called teaching tubs. Each teaching tub is labeled with a letter of the alphabet, a blend of sounds, rhyming words, and short/long vowel sounds. Inside these tubs are small replicas of everyday objects that begin with the letter or sound. These objects help to connect the "thing" to the "word" to the "sign". Once the students begin to make the language connection, further lessons can be planned teaching the language, reading, writing connection and so on. The lessons are endless!!! The only problem is that we don't have these at my school, and I am afraid they are not in the budget. I am asking for help so that my students may have a hands on learning experience that will open the world for them.
