Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are an incredibly diverse group of elementary-aged students at a 6th-year charter school in East Hollywood, Los Angeles. Our school is a wonderful, supportive community that strives to foster our students' interests in order to make learning as meaningful as possible. This involves allowing our students to take ownership of their learning and make independent choices. We value all types of intelligence and encourage our students to make meaning and create knowledge for themselves. They are a group of heart-smart, empathetic individuals who constantly seek solutions to improve their school and local community.
My students are firm believers in justice for all people and recognize that equality does not mean that we are all the same, but rather that all differences are treated with equal respect.
They are adept at observing and discussing current political and social events and are eager to expand their understanding of the lives and experiences of others. They are a group of heart-smart, empathetic individuals who constantly seek solutions to improve their school and local community.
My Project
In 4th grade, students have an increased awareness and understanding of their own identities and roles in their community. Over the past years, I have worked on developing a series of social justice, anti-bias lessons and units that focus on issues and themes such as justice, activism, advocacy, and stereotyping. Throughout the course of my work, I have seen firsthand how having access to diverse books presents different contexts to children that they might not be exposed to in their lives, and also builds resiliency and self-esteem in students of color who often do not see themselves represented in literature. These books will be a meaningful addition to our classroom library and will serve as anchor texts when exploring social justice issues. My students will be able to read these texts in book clubs, use them as sources in research projects, These books will expose my students to experiences that do not mirror their own and support meaningful teachable moments.
