Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various backgrounds. While some students are well off, this is not the case for all of them. Many of our students are on free and reduced lunch programs. This makes for an interesting dynamic in the classroom.
Our school sits in the heart of our little community in Phoenix.
This school is a close-knit community with long-standing traditions. We are a school full of pride. We work together to build a wonderful atmosphere which binds everyone.
My Project
In a polarizing cultural climate, I am constantly trying to find ways to unite students through literature and writing. As a result, I am requesting class sets of two stories -- "Night" a Holocaust survivor story and "Medea" a Greek tragedy. In addition to these class sets, I am also requesting additional resources to use with my students to enhance their understanding of what we are reading in class.
It's possible to teach tolerance and understanding through literature given access to such materials.
With this project, I hope to engage students with stories from the past (both non-fiction and fiction) in a way that makes them active agents in their learning, gain an awareness of humanity, and foster positive societal norms.
