Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade Dual Language students are currently learning a second language as well as state curriculum. They are so willing to learn and love exploring the natural world around them. Many of them come from low-income families and don’t have very much, but they love coming to school to socialize with each other and learn new things. They have been together since kindergarten and are more like siblings now than classmates. They absolutely love science and have such amazing questions about the world. I want to do everything in my power to give them the experience they will take with them wherever they may go.
My Project
We have noticed our students struggle with concepts in science on adaptations, physical structures, inherited traits, learned behaviors, food chains, and food webs, ecosystems and terrariums/aquariums. We would love to have a 5th grade class pet to help our students get a real-life example of all of these topics and ideas. This will allow them to make observations and use critical thinking skills to understand and connect meaning to the above topics. This will also give students an idea of how to care for and maintain a pet and the type of responsibility and empathy that goes into properly care for a living organism. This is why we need a terrarium with a heater and dual thermometer and humidity gauge.
