Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My student population comes from the lower socioeconomic areas in the Houston/Galena Park/San Jacinto area. Despite having less when compared to the other schools and students, these are one of the hardest working students that I have ever seen. As their science teacher, I want to further fuel their passion for learning by reciprocating their level of perseverance and hard work by being able to cater to their needs and being able to challenge them more to help them build a brighter future.
My Project
I want to provide my students with hands-on and interactive learning of the elements and compounds and their atomic models. I want to provide different ways that I present my lessons to cater to my students' different modes of learning. Understanding introductory chemistry in regards to atomic models can sometimes be challenging, especially when you throw in the different parts of an atomic model. Students will benefit from utilizing these models to improve their understanding of atomic structures as part of TEKS 8.5 and 8.8. I believe that providing these models in conjunction with the traditional print-outs can ultimately improve and hasten their understanding of the concepts. They will be introduced to these models which are also used in college-level chemistry classes and therefore give them a little head start in their continuing education.
